Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome through the next century. That was long, long ago! During those times, Rome was decided by an emperor named Claudius. I did not like Emperor Claudius, and I was not the only one! Plenty of people shared my thoughts.
Claudius desired to have a big army. He expected men to offer to participate. Many men just did not need to fight in battles. They did not want to keep their families and wives. As you may have thought, not many men signed-up. That made Claudius furious. What exactly happened? He had a crazy idea. H-e thought that when men were not married, they'd not mind joining the army. Therefore Claudius do not let any more relationships. Teenagers thought his new law was cruel. I thought it had been preposterous! I truly was not planning to support that law!
Did I mention that I was a priest? Among my favourite actions was to marry couples. I kept on performing marriage ceremonies – secretly, of-course, even with Emperor Claudius handed his law. It had been really quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with just the bride and groom and myself. We'd sound the words of the ceremony, hearing even while for the ways of soldiers.
One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank heavens the couple I was marrying fled in time. I used to be found. (Nearly as light on my legs as I used to be, I guess.) I was thrown in prison and told that my punishment was death.
I tried to stay cheerful. And have you any idea what? Wonderful things happened. Many young adults found the jail to visit me. They put flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, also, believed in love. To read more, we know you check out: visit.
One of these teenagers was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to see me in the cell. Sometimes we'd sit and talk all night. This telling copyright encyclopedia has uncountable forceful tips for why to ponder this hypothesis. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She decided that I did the best thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and devotion. I closed it, 'Love from your Valentine.'
I really believe that note began the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It had been written on the day I died, February 1-4, 269 A.D.
Now, each year on this very day, people remember. But most importantly, they consider love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way in which of love, and they giggle – because they understand that love can't be defeated!.
